Tiera

pick 012-1

new 004-1

Where are you from?
T:
I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but I’ve been living in the country lol, Hattiesburg, MS for the past four years. I’m in my sophmore year of college : )

When did you go natural?
T:
A few weeks after I graduated from high school I decided I would go natural.

DSCF0061-1

It seemed like I was always having a bad hair day. I would go three months at a time without a relaxer because I hated getting them and I hated paying for them. My beautican at the time was natural and would always tell me that the relaxer wasn’t me and that I needed to go natural but I told her my head was to big and i couldn’t wear short hair : ) But after joining her church, I was surrounded by women with a variety of beautiful textures, and I decided I was done with the creamy crack. After doing more research, I started to realize, I never needed a relaxer in the first place.

Was it difficult at all?
T:
Transitioning was slightly difficult, but I feel like I was at an advantage because I was used to going without relaxers for long periods of time. The hardest part was being patient and letting it grow. I was checking my new growth daily lol. I think my family didn’t take me seriously because I can be wishy washy at times. They were all for natural hair, but they didn’t really support me cutting all of my hair off, which I did a week before we went on a cruise to Mexico : )

What do you like about being natural?
T:
It’s me. I have never been so confident. My hair fits me, my personality and my features.

Even on days that I THINK I’m having a bad hair day, I still get compliments, and when I had a relaxer, if I was having a bad hair day, I really was having a bad hair day! Natural hair is just fly. It’s unique. I believe that we are wonderfully made and that we should celebrate what our maker has created.

Has anything in your life changed at all since going natural?
T:
I think my overall style has changed along with my hair. I feel free. I’ve also opened my eyes to see the way that society looks at Black people, and what black people see in themsleves. I see beauty in all people and I feel the need to encourage more people to love themselves and love each other.

What style do you like to rock?
T:
I mostly wear twists and twist outs. I pin it all sorts of ways, use humps, or simple head bands.

yay

Lately I’ve fallen in love with Bantu Knot outs ; )

What do you use in your hair?
T:
Shea butter!! And I just got some of Sunshine’s Hello Sweet Thing Whipped butter and its great! Somedays I spray with water and olive oil. Organic’s Leave in Liquid Hair Mayoniase is really good as well.

If your hair had a nickname, what would it be?
T:
hhhmmmm…. maybe penny, because it has a copper color ; )

@Amma… check in the ‘gallery’ tab under ‘fro’. It’s kind of a ‘Hall of Fame’ for the dopest hair on BGLH.

Tiera, your hair is more or less the same texture as mine. I love it & agree with the other ladies, it really suits you. Was it blow-dried on the 2nd last pic?
