Haiti on my mind…
You all have heard me say it many times before — I am half Haitian. My father was born and raised there, and half of my ancestry resides there.
An old picture of me and my Dad
Yesterday a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the country and the death toll is expected to be very heavy. Haiti’s National Palace — the equivalent of the U.S. White House — has partially collapsed.
My Dad is still getting in touch with our family there to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for. So far everyone’s fine. But I know others won’t be so lucky.
I don’t feel like linking to the news reports on this. You can find them all over the web. It’s too depressing I guess, and I’ve heard that comments left about the tragedy haven’t been too kind.
Haitian BGLHers, are you out there? How are you feeling about all this…
And if you want to help…

Still trying to get in touch with my family. I heard that my dad is ok. haven’t talked to him at all. We need to keep praying guys….
I’m from the Caribbean and Haiti is part of my Carib family. It breaks my heart to know the hardships that Haitians are now facing, whether they’re experiencing the disaster firsthand or not. It’s so sad and I’m trying to do the little I can and I’m praying. I’m really looking for a miracle. I know if it was Jamaica, my home country, I’d be devastated and while Haiti isn’t my heart still breaks. I hate seeing people suffer. We all should do what we can, whether it be prayers and/or donations — monetary or time.
My heart is with you and all Haitians. I’m at a loss for words. All I can do is pray and give what I can. I feel impotent but God is in charge. Not man. Peace fill your heart.
My prayers go out to them.
If you are looking for a place to donate (especially those in the Chicagoland area) , please send contributions to the Haitian Crisis Relief Fund at Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti (1227 Dodge Ave, Evanston, IL 60202) or go to http://www.haitiancongress.org to donate. Thank you.
I am hurting. I have not been able to contact my aunt and cousins yet. Praying that they are okay as well as everyone else who’s been affected.
This is surreal. Haiti’s houses and buildings can’t even support such a disaster. The entire capital is ruined. Years of rebuilding to come.
