Last year I asked you guys to nominate BGLH for the 2009 Black Weblog Awards. It was a fun thing to do and we ended up as a finalist in a couple categories, but ultimately didn’t win anything. This year I wasn’t particularly interested in entering BGLH again, but I would like your help in nominating Black Love Poster.

As you know Black Love Poster began with a competition on BGLH. Since I started the Tumblr site back in April 2010 it’s become a minor phenomenon, lol. Some days I get 20 entries, some days just 1 or 2. My policy is to post whatever I receive as long as the photo is decent quality, non-pornographic and features black woman (i.e. I’m not scanning to find the best/coolest looking couples). What has resulted is not just a celebration of black women in love, but an interesting look at the relational choices we are making today.

I’ve entered Black Love Poster in the categories of Best Microblog, Best New Blog and Blog to Watch. And according to the category definitions on blackweblogawards.com , I think BLP fits perfectly;

This category is for the following types of microblogs: Twitter profiles, Tumblr blogs, or Posterous blogs.

This category is for blogs of any topic which have been started on or after September 1, 2009.



Blog to Watch
This category is for that great blog that not everyone knows about…but should! It’s undiscovered. It’s a best kept secret. (Although it won’t be anymore if they win this award!)

“I wanted to send in some pictures of my partner-in-crime Joi and myself, Stephanie of our natural hair journey.



This is Joi and I, we had just graduated from high school. Clearly we still loved the creamy concoction. Joi (left) has her real hair and I have on a few added “pieces”. LOL







Here we were in our sophomore year in college. I was the one more who researched the natural hair care, but being too much of a chicken I needed the support system. Luckily enough I was able to persuade Joi and we did the big-chop together! Awww, aren’t we cute!







Time goes by and still in our young stages we learn from the internet world, YouTube, and others, how to manipulate our hair. Wow! Look at the growth, this was junior year in college.







Now we’re living out life (graduated college this Spring), and we’re STILL learning what work best on our hair. And having fun doing it. It’s crazy because in a matter of months, we went from asking (and still asking) “What do you do to your hair?” to people asking us.”

The transformation from relaxed to natural is absolutely stunning! And how sweet to have someone to go through the changes with.

So as you know I started a Tumblr site based on our “Love is in the Hair” competition a few weeks ago. It’s much less well-known than BGLH but I love doing it and I’ve been quietly working on it on the side.

Afrobella contacted me a few weeks ago about doing a story on Black Love Poster for AOL Black Voices (and even submitted her own black love photo) but I wasn’t sure it would make it. It did and was recently published! Sadly, AOL didn’t post a link on their Twitter account so the commenting has been a bit low but I’m still super excited and grateful that more attention is being paid to happy black women and the men who love them.

She was featured as a style icon back in April and is a fellow Chicagoan. I’m a transplant but she’s lived here her whole life. She’ll primarily be helping plan meetups in Chicago but you just might see her on the blog from time to time.

The process of finding an intern was really fun. I met a lot of super talented and overall amazing women. In the end, Erin had the mix of creativity and organization skill we were looking for.
